Fractional CTO in Mauritius: what it costs and when you need one

vince erkadoo6 min read

Most companies in Mauritius that need a CTO do not need one every day. They need an experienced technical lead for the decisions that are expensive to reverse.

I run technology for Nourishubs, a school meals platform live in four countries, through a consulting contract with clear scope and accountability. Founders often ask what that arrangement looks like in practice.

What a fractional CTO actually is

A fractional CTO is a senior technology leader who works with a company for part of the week, usually one to three days. They sign off on architecture, take part in hiring, and remain accountable for what the team ships. That is more involved than an adviser who joins one monthly call.

The difference from a consultant is ownership. A consultant recommends. A fractional CTO decides, and lives with the decision.

The signals you need one

You probably need a fractional CTO if any of these are true:

  • ·Your development agency works without technical supervision. You pay the invoices, but nobody on your side reads the code.
  • ·Hiring feels like guesswork. A poor senior hire can cost a year of salary and rework.
  • ·You hold customer data, but security consists of promises rather than a repeatable process.
  • ·Features get promised before anyone checks whether the current system can support them.
  • ·You are about to sign a major contract for payments, cloud work, or an ERP, and nobody technical is reviewing it.

If none of these are true, you do not need a CTO of any kind yet. Save the money.

What it costs in Mauritius

Full time CTOs in Mauritius with production experience earn roughly Rs 150,000 to Rs 300,000 or more per month, and the experienced ones are rarely on the market. A fractional arrangement for one or two days a week usually costs between Rs 60,000 and Rs 150,000 per month. Security and compliance work tends to cost more than roadmap reviews.

The honest math: one avoided rewrite pays for a year of it. I have watched companies spend eighteen months rebuilding systems that a two-hour architecture review would have caught on day one.

What the engagement should look like

A useful engagement usually includes the following:

  • ·A written scope stating which decisions the CTO owns and what should be completed each month.
  • ·Direct access to the code and the team. Filtered access makes honest technical review impossible.
  • ·A weekly review of what shipped, what broke, and what comes next.
  • ·An exit plan if the company intends to hire a full time technical leader later.

What I bring to it

For context, I am the CTO of a school meals platform serving four countries. My work covers architecture, a 10 person team, an ISO 27001 implementation mapped to four national privacy laws, React Native apps in both stores, and Kubernetes on AWS EKS. I also founded Bienzoli, a POS and invoicing product for Mauritian small businesses, and work as a senior engineer at SD Worx.

If technical mistakes are starting to cost real money, send me the problem, the scope, and the budget. I will tell you whether the company needs a CTO or simply a better process.

// frequently asked

How much does a fractional CTO cost in Mauritius?

Expect roughly Rs 60,000 to Rs 150,000 per month for one or two days a week, depending on scope. You pay for the technical leadership the company needs without hiring a full time CTO.

When should a startup hire a fractional CTO instead of a full time one?

Hire one when the company has important decisions about architecture, hiring, security, or vendors, but not enough work for a full time CTO. Most companies with fewer than 15 engineers fit that pattern.

What does a fractional CTO actually do day to day?

Owns architecture decisions, reviews what the team ships, runs hiring loops, handles security and compliance, and translates between the founders and the codebase. The output is fewer expensive mistakes.
